Question

I own a 1989 GMC S-15 4X4 truck with a 4.3L V-6 and automatic trans. It has 140,000mi. and is in good mechanical shape. Recently, I have noticed that the brake pedal is harder to depress and there is a hissing noise coming from a rubber boot on the firewall where the pedal goes through. Also, when I'm trying to press the pedal the engine RPM surges, and since the brakes haven't fully engaged, the truck lunges forward. After about 2 seconds of hard pressing the pedal goes down enough to engage the brakes and the hissing stops. What could be causing this? Thanks Terry

Your vehicle has a defective power brake booster. It utilizes engine vacuum to assist in braking. The hissing noise and surge are caused by the vacuum leak created by the faulty booster.
