Question

i have a 1984 renault alliance dl, 1.4-4cyl. automatic. there are two different starters listed for this car. ducellier and paris-rhone. the one that came with the car when i purchased it is a ducellier. this was a private purchase so anyione could have put any part in it for all i know. i have checked the # on the transmission and it matches what is called for. the # is mb1 101. i don't know however if anything in that area has been replaced such as the flywheel or torque converter. when you try to start the car, a loud thrill sound comes from the starter. i took the starter out and had it tested and it tested ok. the starter drive that is in it is a bendix made in france. is there anyway that i can find out if this is the right starter drive or even if it is the right flywheel? i tried shimming the starter out and it does the same thing. i checked another 1984 with the same engine in it and noticed that it was wired different. on the one that i have there is three wires involved. one comes from the alternator, one from the positive side of the battery, and one that slides onto a knife blade and it seems to come from the ignition. the other car that i looked at had two wires only. one from the positive side of the battery and one i could not trace. could this be part of my problem? if you take the starter and hook it up laying on top of the engine and ground it, it works like it is supposed to. the minute i put it back in the car, it does the same thing again. can you please give me some information on this car and maybe some advise on my problem? thank you, lee

You may want to consider having the started tested with the bendix under load which is not the case during most bench tests. The bendix may be defective and slipping and grinding only under load. Also inspect your flywheel ring gear for wear.
