Question

Thanks for offering this very useful service ( and for free at that! ). I've a 66 Electra 225. My problem is that the R12 required to service the AC is impossible to get w/out a tech. license ( or a friend with one ). My question is, what is required to alter the system ( minimally ) to utilize Ra132 instead ? Is it simply a matter of flushing the system, changing driers, and refilling with oil & ra132 ? Any help would be appreciated.

On your 1966 Electra, various A/C retrofit kits are available. The simplest of which involves discharging and evacuating your current system and re-charging with a small amount of PAG oil and 80% of capacity charge of refrigerant R-134a. Other more complex retrofits are available which include new dryers, seals, etc. R-134a is still a relatively new refrigerant. New retrofit options are available almost every day.
