Question

Hi, I have an '88 Chevy Cavalier. After 20-30 minutes of driving (seems to happen more during stop-and-go driving), the engine starts sounding really rough and the transmission feels like it is slipping a lot as I apply gas. At the next stop, the engine cuts out. I can start the engine and idle just fine, but when I shift into Drive or Reverse, the engine cuts out. After 30 minutes or so, the car will start and engage into gear just fine. I've been told that this sounds like a bad solenoid in the transmission. Any other ideas? (Especially ones that are cheaper to fix!) Thanks -- Deva

It sounds as though your 1988 Cavalier has a defective torque converter clutch solenoid. This is a very common failure on your make and model vehicle and the symptoms you describe are typical for this failure.
