Question

I have an 85 Chevy pickup with a 350 engine that is missing, is short of power and is backfiring through the carburetor when I accelerate. I pulled the front spark plug on the right bank and found some black soot around the electrodes. It also smells like it is running rich at the exhaust. Could this indicate that all I need to do is to change the spark plugs and check the timing, or does this sound mare serious than that.

Your 1985 Chevrolet pickup may have a problem as simple as an open sparkplug wire or as complex as a flat camshaft exhaust lobe. As either of these items cause the symptoms you describe, you need a diagnostic check to be performed by a qualified repair facility.
