Question

I have a 1981 Chevrolet Monte Carlo 229(3.8L)V6. yesterday I was driving normal and had to accelerate to get out of the way of another car and noticed that there was poor performance as tho running on 5 cylinders until the passing gear was used. I know this could be a number of things but, I would like to know if you may have a quick possiblity of the problem. Thanks in advance for any answer you can give me. Bill

You seem to be describing a missfire under load in your Monte Carlo. Items such as a faulty EGR valve, open spark plug wire, or cracked or old spark plug are common causes of this complaint on this vehicle. As you realize, there are such a wide range of items that can cause this complaint that only analysis by a trained professional will result in an accurate pinpoint diagnosis.
