Question

I have a 88 Honda Accord. When the car is in neutral or if the clutch is depressed the engine goes off or idles close to 100 rpm. As long as Iam on any of the gears the car runs fine. However when the air-conditioner is switched on the engine idles at 1200 rpm, and the problem is solved. What could be the defect? Thanks venkat

You have a problem with the carburetor idle circuit if this is in fact a carbureted Accord. Both carbureted and injected Accords have a throttle kicker which is used when the air conditioning is on to increase engine RPM to compensate for load put on the engine by the a/c compressor. If your vehicle is carbureted inspect for vacuum leaks, misadjustment and/or dirt in the carburetor. On fuel injected vehicles inspect for a dirty throttle butterfly and/or incorrect minimum air rate settings.
