Question

I have a 1989 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4 Truck that has two problems:
1. The backlight on my radio is really dim. How do I replace the bulb?
2. The water temp gauge never goes above cold, even if the truck is running for over an hour. Should I be concerned?
By the way, you have a great shop and web page!

1. The backlights on your radio can be repaired by removing the radio and replacing the backlight bulbs which are available from your local Ford dealer. Please note that this procedure will involve removal and partial disassembly of the radio chasis.

2. The most common problem on your Ford Ranger is a defective thermostat. This will prevent the engine from reaching operating temperature and in some cases will minimize heater efficiency. This is very important as the computer senses coolant temperature to calculate such things as air fuel mixture and spark advance--so replacement of the thermostat would pay for itself with fuel mileage improvements and less wear and tear on your engine and catalytic converter.
