Question

When replacing the valve seals on my 1986 305 cu. in. I bent most of the push rods because I torqued the rockers to 25 ft. lbs. After I replaced the rods and torqued the rockers to zero lash, I checked the compression on the cylinders. The right side was uniform at 150lbs. but the left side was from 10 to 35 lbs. Prior to my repair efforts the vehicle ran very well except for the leaking of oil into the combustion chambers from the valve seals. What is damaged or what must I check to identify the problem.

I would first suggest you follow the service manual procedure for adjusting the valves and replacing all of the bent push-rods. Then re-check your compression. If the compression is still low, you will be due for a valve job. Please follow the directions in a service manual for the correct adjustment of the valves. Failure to follow the procedures exactly could result in engine damage.
