Question

Could you please tell me what all happens when you take yourcar in for a tune-up. What all do they really do?

Thanks,
- Josh

PS
I have an '89 Bonneville

A typical tune-up consists of renewing spark plugs, checking compression, replacing all engine filters, cleaning and adjusting carburetor where applicable, adjusting timing where applicable, performing a computer engine analysis, renewing distributor cap, rotor, points, and condenser where applicable, renewing PCV valve where applicable, adjusting valves where applicable, checking belts, hoses, fluids, tire pressures, and lights, servicing battery, checking charging and starting systems, cleaning of throttle bore on fuel injected vehicles, administering fuel additive to fuel tank.
Please consult your owner's manual to determine which of these items are due and when they are due. Please note that your 1989 Bonneville requires a major service every 30,000 miles which involves fluid changes and inspections not listed under tune-up.

Thank you for responding to my "tune up" question. Now I have a couple more.(1989 Bonneville)

1. When I step on the gas and let go, on the way down the engine lets out a rattle. I have been told it was something to do with my timing chain. Any thoughts?
2. My heating/cooling vents don't seem to blow hard enough. I especially notice it when I use my AC. At the "HIGH" setting, it leaves something to be desired and in "MAX" it's even weaker, but it sounds like it should be doing more! Is it possible that it is clogged somewhere? And if so, can it be un-clogged? Please respond as soon as possible (it's getting warm outside!)

Thanks again,

Josh

Josh,

1) If your vehicle has a 3.1 liter V-6 it is possible that you are describing a timing chain rattle.I would suggest that you have a diagnostic check done on the engine to inspect the noise and check for timing chain slack.

2) I suggest you inspect for a dirty air conditioning evaporator.Note:water condenses on the air conditioning evaporator-which attracts hair and dust that can plug the evaporator. The evaporator would have to be removed and possibly replaced or cleaned.

Angelo,

Truthfully, I never heard of an air conditioner evaporator before but I'll get it checked! Also, my car is a 3.8 liter V-6, not a 3.1. Does this change your idea about the rattle in the engine? Thanks again!

No, it doesn't. Good luck with it.
