Question

Angelo, my problem is with a 1990 Pontiac Grand Prix with tilt steering. The steering is fine, but I have lost the ability to position the tilt wheel. The mechanism that holds the wheel in the lower positions is shot. The lever moves fine, but the locking device no longer holds the wheel; so I'm drive like a bus driver. Any ideas as to how to fix this thing?

The tilt pawls which are activated by the tilt lever are not engaging a lock pin in the lower tilt knuckle housing. The most common failure is when the housing holding the hardened steel pin that the pawls engage into cracks. The column must be disassembled and inspected.
