Question

I am a proud owner of a 1993 Chevy 4x4 pick-up with only 38,000 miles on it. My truck has a 350 engine with a 4 speed automatic transmission. I have installed a Hypertech computer chip, a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler, a K&N air filter, and modified the air box (cut off the hourglass shaped inlet). The problem I am having is with the oil pressure. Under hard exceleration the oil pressure drops to 0 psi, usually around 4200 rpm's. I run Valvoline 10w-30 oil and change it every 2500 miles. I also notice a drop when I am pulling my 16' race box on long trips. These times the pressure drops to around 15 psi, while holding a steady 3100 rpm's (I always pull my trailer in third gear, never in overdrive). If I slow down and drop the rpm's the oil pressure will return to normal, around 30 psi. I replaced the oil pressure sending unit, thinking it may be faulty, but I'm still having the same problem. I would greatly appreciate any advise you could give me, to help resolve my problem. SANDHO

I would first suggest manually checking your oil pressure to determine whether or not you have an inaccurate gauge or an internal engine problem. From there, you will either be checking the remainder of the gauge circuit or you will be checking things such as oil pump drive and removing the oil pan to inspect the oil pump and pickup.
