Question

I recently purchased a 1990 Jeep Cherokee with 50k miles on it. After driving it for only a few days I noticed a suspicious noise coming from either the exhaust system or motor. I took it to several mechanics, the Jeep dealership where I bought the car and another Jeep dealer. I got a different opinion from each place I went. The first mechanic told me that there was a major problem in the motor and I should take the car to the dealer immediately. Of course the dealer disagreed with this diagnosis and they replaced the muffler. The noise was still there after this so I went to another mechanic. He told me the motor was in good shape but I was still suspicious of the noise under the hood. It sounds almost like a knock bu the motor seems to run fine. Finally I went to another dealer who told me that they have replaced entire motors because of the noise to no avail. He told me that the 1990 Cherokee 4.0 liter just made the unnatural sound. Have you ever heard of this on that particular model before. I want to be sure that there is no problem with my motor and that the dealer is playing straight with me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have not heard of any abnormal noises that were specific to Jeep Cherokees with the 4.0L engine. I have worked on many and have a fair amount of experience with them. I would suggest getting another opinion just to be sure. In fact, I own a Jeep with the same engine and have not experienced anything similar to what you are describing.
