Question

Hi,

I have A '90 Geo Prism and the check engine light came on recently. I proceeded to read the code and retrieved error code 71 which I think is EGR related.
Anyway, I took off the EGR Valve, examined all the hoses connected to it and found that there was water in the EGR Valve. Any idea what's causing this. The car has approximately 95000 miles on it.

thanx,

Mike

Hi, Mike. Thanks for writing. 71 is the code for the EGR temperature sensor. I'm guessing that this is unrelated to the water in the EGR. The code may be a result of a defective sensor, a wiring problem, or a bad ECM. This problem needs to be tracked down--perhaps by your local repair shop or by Silverado Auto Service if you're located near Napa.
As for the water in the EGR, without seeing the vehicle, my first guess would be that this is condensation. This would happen if the vehicle has sat for a while or is used for short trips. To be sure, I would once again say that this problem needs to be diagnosed by your local repair shop.
I hope I have been of some assistance. Please write again!

Followup

Thanx for the prompt and courteous response. It's hard to find people who want to take the time to give you answers. It's too bad you guys are way up in Napa, otherwise I would have had the wife bring the car in to you today (we live in Milpitas - north of San Jose). As I'm writing this, I'm waiting for a call from the local shop over here. You are correct in guessing that the car is driven only short distances (and parked outside uncovered). Will the water in the EGR valve cause any problems?????
Well, if I have no luck with the local guy here, I will definitely pay you guys a visit. Take care and have a happy and safe new year!

Mike,

Good luck with your car. The water in the EGR valve shouldn't cause any problems. I would take the car for a long drive (15 miles or more) once in a while--perhaps out on the highway (isn't it 237 down there in Milpitas?). This will also help to prevent other problems associated with driving only short distances. (For example, holes in your muffler.)
I'll be happy to answer any other automotive questions you have. Thanks for writing!
