Question

Dear Silverado Auto Service,
My problem is with my 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. First of all it is a great car and my wife really likes it. The problem is when we go on longer trips (20 miles or more) the transmission seems to want to stay in drive when the brake is applied. (Also, that trip is usually at 65 mph or more). Around town or shorter trips there is no problem. If I shift down manually it works OK, but if I don't it bucks and stalls. The car is a quad4 w/ a non-overdrive automatic transmission. Can you help us?

Hello Richard. Your vehicle has a defective torque converter clutch solenoid. This is a check ball solenoid which activates a hydraulic circuit to apply a clutch in your torque converter. The solenoid check ball is intermittently sticking. This repair does not require transmission removal but will probably set you back at least $200. Thanks for writing.
