Question

Hi, thanks for providing this e-mail Q&A, it's great! My name is Darwin, I have an '88 Toyota truck with a carbureted 4-cyl. engine & manual transmission. As the car gets older I notice more often a tapping noise that starts after accelerating hard to the top of a gear (high rpm). The tapping persists for several days, but seems to go away eventually. I sometimes hear the same engine sound if I shift gears without adequate speed, for example when going up a steep hill. Appreciate any information you can offer. Thanks, Darwin.

Sounds as though you are describing an engine ping. I would suggest inspecting the quality of fuel you are using, EGR valve operation, condition of engine tune and ignition timing, and if all else fails: possible excess carbon buildup in combustion chambers.
